A big thanks to everyone who participated in the Darwin Day Exhibit 2011. CAFLS Tailgate

First Meeting of the Year!

Thank you to everyone that came out for our first meeting of the semester! We had a great turn out and we hope more will come for our second meeting. Plans for the semester were brought up and a few ideas we had were a trip to the aquarium/zoo, a white water rafting trip, and a bonfire/cookout. The officers and members voted to have our roadside cleanup on October 17th and it will most likely begin around 2pm. More details will be given as we come closer to the actual date. Since our biosci t-shirts sold out shortly after the meeting ended we are considering designing a new one if we have enough interest!

This is going to be a great year and we are going to have a lot great events. Remember to follow us at orgsync.com as well as the blog! See you at our next meeting (October 6th)!

The BioSci Club will hold it's first meeting of the semester, Wed, Sept 1st, 7 pm, in the Jordan Room. Membership dues are $20 for the year. Officers will discuss the upcoming club events including the Issaqueena Trail Rd clean-up, guest speakers and other club activities.

Final Club Meeting of the Year, Tues, April 6th, 5 pm, Jordan Room

Biosci club!

Just a reminder that our final meeting of the year will be NEXT TUESDAY
April 6th from 5-7pm in the Jordan Room. We will not have a speaker and
instead will have an end of the year party!

The tshirts should be in so look for a coming email with the price and
attached to this email is a proof of the shirt. Although the race was
close, kelly green beat out forest green so that is the color we ordered.

We also plan to have officer elections and briefly go over relay for life
and our fundraiser. The fundraiser will also be that evening April 6th, so
please consider going to 356 and encourage others to do the same. ALL
donations will go to our Relay team and 10% of the night's profits will
also go to us! The band, Cooper's Puzzle, will be playing from 10:30pm-2am
so come out for music, food and drinks and help us raise money!

If you have any questions, feel free to email me and again PLEASE consider
a position for next year (president, VP, secretary, treasurer, and public
relations officer).

GA Aquarium Trip, Sat, Feb 27th

We will be going on our spring semester Georgia Aquarium trip NEXT Saturday, February 27th. We will plan to leave from Long Hall around 10am.
The price will only be $10 for paid members (regular price is $26 for non members).

In order to make sure we have enough transportation for everyone, I need to know who is planning to attend next weekend. Please email me back and further information will come when I know better the number of members interested!

February Meeting Minutes

MEETING MINUTES and ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hello all! This meeting was an important one as Darwin Week is upon us!
We can use help with everything, so if you are interested please email the BioSci club. We have tons of flyers that can be stapled or glued anywhere you’d like so come by and grab a few.

First, at 8 pm on Thursday (February 11), Dr. Kelly Smith will be showing the movie “Flock of Dodos” in the McKissick Theater. Admission is FREE and there will be a Question-and-Answer session afterwards for all who attend. This is typically very fun.

Then, in the ground floor lobby of the Hendrix Center, we will have our Darwin Day display with faculty and students present to answer questions. The display will include samples, simulations, biographies, podcasts, and many more displays to educate the many people who come to look at what’s being shown. The event will take place from 10:00 until 2:00. You can sign up to sit at a table and answer questions – just email us.

Lastly for Darwin Day, we are going to have a Departmental cookout on Friday, February 12, at 5 pm in the Jordan Room. We need volunteers to help us set-up and clean-up, so please email us to let you know when you can come to help. ANYONE is welcome to come, so bring your friends and tell your classmates!

BioSci doesn’t end after Darwin Week! On February 27th we will load up and head to the Georgia Aquarium. If you haven’t been, you’ll definitely want to come and see the world’s greatest aquarium and if you have been, you know you want to go back! Email us to let us know you are interested – we will send a specific departure time ASAP!!

On Sunday, March 7th come out and volunteer with the BioSci club and help us clean up Issaquenna Road! This never takes long and afterwards we will all enjoy a free lunch! Clean up our environment, get some volunteer hours, and have some fun.

We have also decided on a T-Shirt design and will be printing them up very soon. Watch your email for a preview and let us know if you want one.

And lastly, we are going to participate in Relay for Life and we are counting on your support. We are going to pair with tri-Beta and AED to raise some money at 356. They will be hosting a battle of the bands contest and on a few Tuesdays and on March 30 we will help out 356 and in return half of their profits will go towards Relay for Life!

Our next meeting will be March 3 (Wednesday!) – bring your friends, enjoy some free pizza, and let us know what you want to do and we can do it! We have had a number of suggestions for speakers so we will undoubtedly have a good one. See you there.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful winter break and are ready for a new at semester with the Biosci club! We will be having our next meeting next Wednesday, January 13th in Long 332 at 7pm. Unlike our usual meetings we will not be having a speaker. Instead, we will be discussing dissection kit sales, Darwin Day, a trip to the Georgia aquarium, and other events for the semester! As always, we will have FREE PIZZA! And remember to bring your dues, $20, for the year!

Before our meeting on Wednesday, we need volunteers to sell dissection kits early next week. The times are listed below. Please email Dr.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and made it back to Clemson safely. This Wednesday (December 2, 2009) will be the LAST BioSci Club meeting of the semester! We will be meeting in the Jordan Room at 6:00 pm for FREE food and then we will join Beta Beta Beta for the Planet Earth Movie Showing at 6:30 in the McKissick Theater. Admission to the movie is FREE! Tri-Beta will be selling baked goods before the movie as one of their club fundraisers, so please bring a little extra cash to support them!

Biosci Club,

This Saturday, November 14th, the Biosci Club will be visiting the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia! We plan to leave Long Hall at 10am and will be returning by 6pm at the latest . The normal entrance fee is $9.75, but all paid Biosci Club members will be given a discount and will only pay $6. We plan to carpool instead of taking buses so if you are willing to drive, please let me know!

We will need to know asap if you plan on attending the trip and we'll let you know by Friday afternoon if the trip is still scheduled. Remember that anyone in Vertebrate Biology needs to visit a zoo or aquarium so if you or your friends are in the class be sure to join us!

3)Events for the fall semester
i)Adopt-a-Highway – The BioSci Club participates in trying to keep Clemson looking nice and to keep our town as clean as we can. We clean Isaquena Trail Road twice a year. We will be doing this Sunday. We will be sending out the exact time and place that we are meeting shortly. Please come and help our town and our club while getting some volunteer hours for yourself!
(a) We will meet in the morning around 10 A.M. First we will do the clean up, but this will be pretty short. Plus, the more friends that you bring, the more fun it is and the quicker we get finished!! After we are through cleaning up we are going to get a free lunch compliments of YOUR BioSci club. We are going to be doing this with BSGSA, the graduate student BioSci club so come and meet some of the Grad Students as well
ii)Rafting Trip – October 3rd is the day picked for us to go rafting. We aren’t sure exactly where yet, but we are trying to find a fun, cheap, close location and I think we are getting close!
iii)Zoo trip – Going with the BioSci club to the zoo still fulfills your requirement for vertebrate biology, but with us it is cheaper and we will hopefully have the opportunity to go behind the scenes! Information

5) Speaker - Chelsea Woodward – Chelsea did an SCA internship in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a refuge the size of South Carolina. Chelsea did an absolutely FANTASTIC job speaking at our first meeting! Field Trip to the Georgia Aquarium

Over 30 members and friends of the BioSci Club participated in a fantastic trip to the Georgia Aquarium. From the Lake Victoria cichlids to the playful sea otters, from the leafy sea dragons to the awesome whale sharks, club members enjoyed a day with these amazing critters.

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, the BioSci Club helped to organize the 2009 Darwin Week Celebration. Events included a showing of the movie "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed", a public lecture by Dr. Jody Hey, a Darwin Day public exhibit at the Hendrix Student Center, and a birthday party and cook-out in Chuck's memory.

a. Costs: $7 for members, $15 for non-members

Biosci Club Minutes: 1/14/09

I. Upcoming Events

a. Georgia aquarium trip:
-NEXT Saturday, January 24th!
-meet at 9am outside of Long Hall
-the price will be $10 and possibly less for members
-this is NOT for Biosci members only, so bring your friends!
-look for emails for added details/changes before the trip!
b. Darwin week:
i. Feb. 11th
1. Dr. Hey will be speaking at 7pm at Tillman
ii. Feb 12th
1. Darwin Day booth will be set up from 10-2pm but we will need members to set up/clean up from 9-3pm
2. Dr. Hey will lead a seminar at 3:30pm held in 100 Bracket Hall
3. 5pm Cook out to celebrate Darwin’s birthday and Darwin week!
c. Hiking/camping:
-once the weather gets warmer, we will be planning a trip
-will hopefully set a date at the next meeting!
d. Issaquenna Roadside Clean-up:
-February 21st at 10am
-everyone who comes will get free lunch wherever we choose to go and the more friends we bring, the faster it will go!

II. Fundraisers
a. Dissection kits:
-a HUGE success! Thanks to your help, we were able to sell all of the dissection kits and will hopefully be able to put that money toward free club T-shirts to Biosci Club members! Great job everyone!
b. Student Government:
-we’re hoping to get funds from Student government to help pay for events such as Darwin week so we can use our fundraising money toward things the club members want (T-shirts, camping trips, ect)
-anyone willing to help apply for funding, please let us know!

***Please also remember to pay your dues at the next meeting! Although the dissection kit fundraiser was a big success, we still need due money to help pay for house keeping items like pizza, plates, cups, ect. Thanks so much, everyone!

The BioSci Club is a service/social organization open to any student with an interest in Biology. The club meets regularly on the first Wed of each month in the Jordan Room (on the walkway between Long and Jordan Halls). This spring semester the club has planned lots of interesting events from a field trip to the GA Aquarium to the annual Darwin Day Celebration.
